About Traditional Oriental Medicine - Our Herbs
In the beginning, Chinese herbal medicine knowledge was passed orally from generation to generation. Then in 3494 BC, a written account of herbal knowledge was begun. In the Song Dynasty (1000 years ago), the records were refined. Even thousands of years ago, the Chinese knew that herbs worked—either alone or in combination with other herbs. What they did not know was why some herbs seemed to possess extraordinary medicinal effects upon a wide variety of human ailments. Today we still know that herbs work, but with the addition of modern technology, we are beginning to understand why they work. Traditional Chinese Medicine, in conjunction with contemporary Western medicine, can have a profound affect on the human body. Chinese herbal medicine consists of understanding and mastering theory, strategy, substances, and formulas. This means that once a problem is identified, the strategy of treatment and—with the quantity and use of specific herbs—the synergistic effect of the formula will naturally follow. The composition of an effective formula involves more than putting together ingredients to obtain a certain effect: a specific hierarchy of chief, deputy, assistant, and envoy herbs needs to be followed. The chief herb—ginger—has the greatest effect upon the principal disease or ailment such as motion sickness or digestive problems. Secondly, the deputy herb(s) aid the chief herb in treating the principal disease or ailment and serves as the main ingredient directed against a coexisting disease or ailment. With motion sickness or digestive problems, one can also suffer from headaches, dizziness, bloating, and even loose stools or diarrhea. Next, the assistant herb(s) reinforce the effect of the chief or deputy ingredients, treat less important aspects of the disease or ailment, and moderate or eliminate any harsh properties of the ingredients. Finally, the envoy harmonizes the actions of the other ingredients and focuses the action of the formula on a certain area of the body. Single herbs can produce great health benefits, but herbal combinations are capable of balancing and harmonizing the entire body, thereby helping one to achieve homeostasis. Herbal Extract Facts
