It’s finally here... The convention or vacation you’ve been waiting for all year!
Perhaps the flight or drive to your destination wasn’t that bad. But the stiffness in your lower back and legs that you got from sitting in an awkward position for an extended period time will definitely slow you down. And once you’re there, standing for long periods and walking all over the exhibit hall or the streets of that exciting city will only make your back ache and legs cramp up.
This is a common condition for travelers, and a major part of it may be a lack of potassium in your diet.
Potassium plays a key role in smooth muscle contraction and good health.It is the major electrolyte found inside all of your body's cells, including muscle and nerve cells. If potassium levels are low, muscle and nerves may not function normally and you may experience muscle aches, spasms, cramping, or even a tingling sensation.
How Can You Prevent This?
Eating foods rich in potassium, such as spinach, mushrooms, salmon, potatoes, bananas, avocadoes, and yogurt will help support your muscles and nerves. Keep in mind, however, that the more sodium (salt) you consume, the more potassium your body eliminates. So, limit your sodium intake.
Alcohol will cause you to lose more potassium than normal. Excessive drinking also leads to dehydration, which can also cause muscle spasms and cramping. Limiting your alcohol consumption, and drinking more water, will help you stay hydrated and reduce these ill effects.
